看外刊很重要，我看了今年考上MTI的学员经验贴，他们基本一周最少看5篇外刊的。回译同样很重要，通过通过这种方法我们可以掌握英语中的一些地道表达，真正提升英语和翻译水平。尤其是备考CATTI、MTI的小伙伴们要多练习外刊回译，因为不是真题就考的是外刊回译。今天高斋雒老师Joy和小伙伴就给大家分享一小段回译。
原文：
干旱已经持续了十多年，但他惊讶地发现当地农民对挥霍用水毫不在乎，比如有水的时候就大水漫灌，十分浪费水资源。自上世纪70年代以来，种植棉花、坚果等高耗水作物的大型农场遍布整个盆地。
注意：我们动动笔，试着把它译回英文。在动笔之前，我们首先确定这篇文章的时态，它描写的是过去的情况，所以翻译的时候时态上是过去完成时和过去时。好了，现在大家可以动笔了。
有人可能会翻成这样：
Drought had lasted for more than ten years, but he was shocked to find that local farmers never paid attention to wasting water. For example, theysquandered water by using flood irrigation when the water was available. Since the 1970s, large farms growing high-water consuming crops like cotton and nuts had spread across the basin.
而经济学人原文是这样的：
Drought had already lasted more than a decade, yet he was shocked to find local farmers insouciant about squandering water, using wasteful flood irrigation, for example, when the water was available. Since the 1970senormous farms growing thirsty crops such as cotton and nuts had spread across the basin.
通过对比，我们可以学到下面十个知识点：
1. “持续十多年”：last表示持续多长时间，for加不加都可以。一个decade就是“十年”，所以可以说“lasted for more than ten years”，也可以说“lasted more than a decade”。
2. “但他惊讶地发现”：“但”字but和yet都可以。Yet在表示“但是，可是”之意时，可以用来引出颇令人惊讶的事实，因此原文中的yet用的恰到好处；
“惊讶地发现”，可以说was shocked/surprised/astonished to find。这句话中shocked更符合语境，因为surprised和astonished都是中性词，它们既可以指因好事而惊讶，也可以指因坏事而惊讶，而shocked往往指不好的含义，震惊，受到打击、冲击之意。
Find可以使用为find that从句，也可以是find+宾语+宾补这个结构中，宾补部分常为doing、done、to be或者adj形式/形容词短语。
经济学人原文说的是find local farmers insouciant about，宾语是local farmers，后面的宾语补足语正使用了adj形式insouciant about。这样的英语更简洁。
3. “对挥霍用水毫不在乎”：“never paid attention to wasting water”中pay attention to这个短语经常用来表示“对……予以关注、重视”之意，例如“pay attention to protecting the farmer’s property”，“重视对农民财产的保护”。
paid attention to wasting water用在这里就有种“重视挥霍用水”的含义，“挥霍用水”是不好的现象，还要“重视”，岂不成了让人进一步浪费水了，所以pay attention to这个短语在这里并不适合，不然意思就相反了，错误了；
经济学人原文是“insouciant about squandering water”。insouciant读作[ɪnˈsuːsiənt]，意思是“漠不关心的，漫不经心的”，它和about搭配，表示“对……漠不关心，毫不在乎”。
insouciant about后面可以跟sth或doing sth。例如：
Programme-makers seem irresponsibly insouciant about churning out violence.
编程者似乎对大批量制造含暴力因素的产品处之漠然，毫无责任心。
“挥霍用水”是squander water，因为在insouciant about 后面，所以用动词ing；
squander（读作[ˈskwɑːndər]）这个词表示“浪费、挥霍（金钱、资源、机遇等）”。
经济学人上有这么一句话：
He would not drink; he would not squander the hard-earned fruits of his labor on alcohol, he had promised himself.
他曾向自己保证过：不喝酒，不把自己辛苦换来的血汗钱挥霍在酒上面！
4. “比如”：两个译文都是用的“for example”，区别在于for example的位置不同。第一种是把For example放在句子开头，后面跟了一个很长的完整的句子；
原文则是用现在分词短语using wasteful flood irrigation开头，然后再接for example，中间用逗号隔开。名词或动名词短语+逗号+for example，这种更符合英文的习惯表达，更为地道。
5. “有水的时候”：“when the water was available”。“有……”不要说have/has，可以说“sth. be available”。
6. “大水漫灌，十分浪费水资源”：如果完全按照中文结构来翻，就是“squandered water by using flood irrigation”，这种翻译也可以，flood irrigation即“大水漫灌”。“漫灌”是灌溉方式的一种，所以加了动词using；
经济学人版本则是“using wasteful flood irrigation”，用wasteful修饰“flood irrigation”，即“十分浪费水资源的大水漫灌方式”，四个单词就把意思表达清楚了，十分简洁，鼓个掌！
7. “大型农场”：“农场”是farm，“大型的”可以说large，也可以说large-scale，经济学人里面的enormous我们可以学习下，可以表示面积大。
8. “高耗水作物”：作物是crops；“高耗水的”可以说high-water consuming（连字符的位置很灵活，有的放在high和water之间，有的放在water和consuming之间，也有不加连字符的情况）。
“高耗水作物”也可以说water-intensive crops。-intensive意为“……密集型”，如劳动密集型 labor intensive。“water-intensive”即“耗水的”。
金融时报上说：
The production of biofuels is also very water-intensive.
生产生物燃料耗水较大。
经济学人原文里面“高耗水的”用thirsty来表示。thirsty crops是固定表达，指“高耗水作物”。
经济学人上还有一句话也使用了这个表达：
In India and elsewhere the easy availability of groundwater has encouraged the cultivation of thirsty crops in water-stressed areas.
在印度和其他地方，随处可得的地下水促使人们在缺水地区种植高耗水作物。
thirsty这个词也可以用来指“高耗能的”，例如这句话Heavy industry also tends to be thirsty and dirty. 重工业也往往是高耗能高污染的。
9. “棉花、坚果等耗水作物”：看到中文里的“……等”，就想到like，such as这些词，即“thirsty crops like/such as cotton and nuts”.
10. “遍布整个盆地”：spread across the basin。“遍布，遍及某地”，用spread across。
“遍布”也可以说spread all over。“遍布全球”spread all over the world。
spread的用法在高斋汉译英和外刊精读课里面讲过很多遍了。它也可以表示“蔓延，扩散开来”之意。例如Slowly a smile spread across her face.她的脸上慢慢露出了微笑。
