经济学人精读：华为VS三星，可折叠屏手机哪家强？| 外刊双语

华为VS三星可折叠屏手机

三星不久前推出了可折叠屏手机，不到一周，华为5G也推出了可折叠屏手机，相关信息刷爆网络，我也看了不少报道，今天就把我看到的做一些学习笔记，分享给大家。

三星推出第十代Galaxy系列手机

《经济学人》Espresso在三星推出之前，在Espresso上进行了报道。它是这么说的：

It has been ten years since the South Korean electronics giant began selling the Galaxy, its flagship line of smartphones. In that time it has sold more smartphones than any company in the world. Today, Samsung will unveil its tenth-generation Galaxy model, the S10.

参考译文：三星销售旗舰智能手机Galaxy系列已有十年。在此期间，其智能手机销量遥遥领先。今天，三星将推出第十代手机Galaxy S10系列。

It has been +时间段+ since，这个结构表示的是“自……以来已经多久了”。这个句型里面前面是完成时，since后面的部分谓语动词用过去式，所以这里是began。例如金融时报上的这句话：It has been three years since the roof started to fall in. 从屋顶开始坍塌到现在，已经过去3年了。

最后是flagship line这个表达。“旗舰手机”怎么说？旗舰手机就是指一种标准为4G RAM，6寸大屏等的手机。“旗舰智能手机”的英语是the flagship line of smartphones。line在这里指的是手机的种类。旗舰店，flagship stores/shops。

in that time也可以说during that time或during that period of time，指的是“在……期间”，即过去十年间，销售旗舰智能手机Galaxy系列期间。

unveil这个词。veil本身指的是“面纱，用面纱挡住；遮盖物，掩盖物”。un-，是一个很常见的否定前缀。unveil就是把面纱揭下来，揭露，使公之于众的意思。这里的unveil its tenth-generation Galaxy model, the S10推出第十代手机Galaxy S10系列。

Model是系列的意思，the S10是第十代系列的名称。

注意翻译：1.旗舰智能手机Galaxy系列。2. 在此期间。3.遥遥领先。4. 推出。5.第十代手机Galaxy S10系列。

紧接着文章对三星推出的这一新款智能手机的功能特点进行了介绍。

Samsung has hinted that another smartphone model, expected this year, will feature a foldable screen, capable of transitioning betweena tablet- and smartphone-sized display. Other models due out this year may contain upgrades to cellular and Wi-Fi technology. 

参考译文：三星曾暗示，预计今年推出另一款可折叠屏幕智能手机，可以在平板电脑屏幕与智能手机屏幕之间任意切换。今年将推出的其它型号手机可能会升级蜂窝和Wi-Fi技术。

expected this year，即今年有望/预计怎么怎么样，它实际上等于that/which is expected to be introduced/unveiled this year。和后面的due out this year表达同一含义。due out意为“待发，待推出，待公布的”。例如，They’ have been mixing tracks for a new album due out later this year. 他们一直在为定于今年稍后推出的新专辑录制歌曲。

feature，讲到推出的新款手机特征是什么时，用feature这个词。

capable of transitioning between a tablet- and smartphone-sized display是形容词短语表特点，capable of表示“能……的，有……能力的，能干……”。例如，Most living creatures are capable of adaptation when compelled to do so. 大多数生物都能在迫于压力的情况下适应新环境。

a tablet- and smartphone-sized display，注意这里连字符的用法。例如，中小企业就可以说small- and medium-sized enterprises（SMEs）。

contain upgrades to cellular and Wi-Fi technology：升级什么的表达，upgrades to。upgrades 和后面的improvements是一个意思，都表示升级。 cellular [ˈsɛljəlɚ]细胞的; 蜂窝状; cellular and Wi-Fi technology，即蜂窝和Wi-Fi技术。

文章最后提到了三星升级技术，发布新款手机的目的，点出了它与中国手机品牌华为、小米之间的竞争。

The firm hopes these improvements will be enough to fend off Chinese competitors Huawei and Xiaomi, which gobbled up market share in 2018.

参考译文：三星希望这些技术升级能够抵御中国公司华为和小米的竞争，这两家公司2018年占领了不少市场。

which gobbled up market share：gobble up，吞噬，吞并。这里指的是抢占市场份额，抢占市场份额我们还可以用一些同义词来替换，如take，take up，occupy这些词。gobble up还可以表示“吞并”，我们来看个纽约时报上的句子：

Boatsetter has gobbled up American startups.

游艇租赁平台Boatsetter已经吞并了很多美国初创公司。

三星希望借此改变局势，只可惜，碰上了华为。三星折叠手机Galaxy Fold发布不到一周，就遇上了对手。

在对两款手机进行比较的过程中，我们首先来学习一下外刊中有哪些常用的表示“推出新产品”的词汇。

“推出新产品”的英文表达

中国日报双语新闻上有这么一段文字：

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold announcement isn’t even a week old yet, and we already have a competitor that is thinner, has a bigger screen, and folds flatter.

三星折叠手机Galaxy Fold发布不到一周，就遇上了对手，华为5G 折叠屏手机更薄、屏幕更大、折叠更平滑。

这里用了一个announcement来表示“发布，推出新产品”之意。前面刚学了unveil。

还有一些词同样可以用来表示“推出新产品”。例如，introduce，roll out。

《纽约每日新闻》上对这一事件也进行了报道，它是这么写的：Less than a week after Samsung introduced the Galaxy Fold, Chinese tech giant Huawei rolled out the Mate X, a razor-thing 5G phone that folds in half with no gap.

此外，debut something也可以用来指“推出新产品”。《纽约每日新闻》这篇文章的标题就叫作Chinese tech giant Huawei debuts foldable phone，中国科技巨头华为可折叠屏手机初次亮相！debut这个词的意思是“首次出场，首次登台，首秀”。因此，在表示推出什么新产品时，我们也可以用debut来表示，即debut something。

外刊中还有一个常见的词launch，它也可以用来表示推出，发布了新产品。高斋外刊双语精读公主号上曾发布过一篇有关外媒报道小猪佩奇和《啥是佩奇》的文章，上面就有这么一段话：

Although the Entertainment One has previously said it was looking to reduce its reliance on its flagship brand, Peppa Pig performed particularly well in China with more than 40m books sold since its launch in the country in April 2016. 尽管Entertainment One此前曾表示将寻求减少对其旗舰品牌的依赖，但《小猪佩奇》自2016年4月在中国推出以来，在中国很受欢迎，图书销售量超过4000万册。

这句话中小猪佩奇在中国的推出用的就是launch这个词。同样这里也出现了“旗舰”这个词，旗舰品牌就是flagship brand。

我们对launch这个词作进一步的学习。我们最开始学的意思是“发射（火箭，卫星等）”，例如launch a rocket。它还可以和船有关，指“使船下水，新船下水”。The launch of a ship was a big occasion. 新船下水是件大事。此外，它还可以用来表示“发起什么活动，发动袭击等”含义。

举个例子：The police have launched an investigation into the incident . 警方已对该事件展开调查。再有就是我们这里说的推出新产品之意，launch a new product/the launch of a new product。这种一词多义的词大家要注意区别。

既然人们说华为较之三星更薄、更大、更平滑。上面就已经有提到：we already have a competitor that is thinner, has a bigger screen, and folds flatter. 华为5G 折叠屏手机更薄、屏幕更大、折叠更平滑。那么，它又具有哪些特点呢？

华为5G可折叠屏手机的特点

第一，华为手机更为轻薄。

中国日报双语新闻是这样描述它的轻薄的：Unlike the Samsung folding phone, the Galaxy Fold, which opens inwards, like a book, the Huawei phone opens outwards. Given this different functionality, Huawei has managed to make this device incredibly thin.

不同于像翻书一样由内翻开的三星折叠手机Galaxy Fold，华为折叠手机是鹰翼式外折。这一别致的功能设计让华为手机更加轻薄。

folding phone也可以说foldable phone，opens inwards, like a book像翻书一样由内翻开, the Huawei phone opens outwards鹰翼式外折，这个可以理解吧，想想苍鹰是如何展翅飞翔的。正是这种功能，华为手机更薄。

has managed to 是成功干某事的意思。

South China Morning Post《南华早报》也进行了一番描述，如下：

Build quality, likewise, was impressive. The display did not show signs of creasing at the folding point, and at 5.4mm thick when opened up, is jaw-droppingly thin.

参考译文：机身质量同样很好。手机屏幕折叠处没有折痕，不折叠时厚度仅有5.4毫米，薄得令人惊讶。

可见，形容其超薄的时候可以用这两个短语：incredibly thin和jaw-droppingly thin。

incredibly指“难以置信的，惊人的；极，很”，jaw-droppingly thin，jaw-droppingly字面意思为“惊掉下巴的”，实际上它同样表示“难以置信的，十分惊人的”的含义。用来表示thin的程度，说明确实是很薄啦。

第二，华为手机折叠平滑。

折叠平滑，没有折痕怎么说？这里为我们提供了两种表达方式：folds flatter；The display did not show signs of creasing at the folding point；folds in half with no gap。creasing即折痕。

《纽约每日新闻》是这么写的：Chinese tech giant Huawei rolled out the Mate X, a razor-thing 5G phone that folds in half with no gap. 

第三，华为手机机身质量更好。build quality这里指的是“机身质量”。

第四，华为手机是世界上最快的5G手机

Huawei said it has an advantage over other companies launching 5G devices because it provides the full-range of equipment needed to get wireless networks up and running.

参考译文：华为表示，与其他推出5G设备的公司相比，它更具优势，因为它提供了启动和运行无线网络所需的全套设备。

have/has an advantage over sb/sth，固定搭配，意思是比……更有优势。这里我们要注意后面的launching，这里的launching 5G devices是作other companies的后置定语。千万不能把它理解为have/has an advantage in sth/doing sth（在某事/做某事上具有优势）里的doing结构了，因为have/has an advantage in doing sth里面doing前面是需要加in的。

needed to get wireless networks up and running是the full-range of equipment的后置定语。equipment needed，即所需的设备；to get wireless networks up and running，这个running不要把它理解为动词run的含义，如果是这样的话，它就应该是get sth to do的结构了。实际上，它和up一样，都表达的是一种运行的状态。up and running，当作固定搭配来记，记“启动和运行”。

它快到什么程度呢？

The company said the super-fast chipset will allow users to download a 1 gigabyte movie in just 3 seconds.

参考译文：华为表示，在超高速芯片支持下，用户可实现最快3秒下载一部大小1G的视频。

chipset指芯片组，类似的词还有如headset耳机，handset则指电话听筒，遥控器。

allow users to do something，在描述科技产品时，我们不要把allow理解为允许，同意做什么，就翻译成“可……，可以怎么样”就好了。这个在北航MTI真题里面考过。

当然啦，华为5G折叠屏手机还有许多神奇的功能，不过有些词汇太过专业，我们不要求全部掌握，这里就不一一为大家说明了。大家感兴趣的话可以去看一看它的全球发布会。

面对这样的一款手机，有人肯定会问，肯定售价不低吧。恭喜你，说对了。

产品售价多少不同表达

price可以作动词，be priced at + 价格，表示售价。《华尔街日报》：

The Chinese company’s new phone, called Mate X, will be priced atabout $2,600. 

参考译文：华为Mate X可折屏手机价格约1.7万元（约合2600美元）。

Cnet上报道了一篇文章，标题叫作Using the Mate X made me a foldable phone believer，开头这么写道：

Last week, Samsung and Huawei announced the $1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X foldable phones, respectively.

参考译文：上周，三星和华为分别推出了价值1980美元的Galaxy Fold可折叠屏手机和2600美元的Mate X可折叠屏手机。

三星的折叠屏手机系列叫Galaxy Fold，华为的的5G折叠屏手机是Mate X 。注意 the $1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X foldable phones里面$1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X 是修饰 foldable phones，前面有the。

所以这里的 $1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X foldable phones直接是价格+产品，表示售价多少。

我们再来看看产品售价为多少的其它表示方法。

Huawei’s new foldable phone will top both Apple and Samsung in price, costing around $2600（取自cnbc）直接用cost表示售价。 

文章内容里说道：The Chinese tech giant said the phone will start at a whopping price of 2299 euros (approximately $2600), and will be available in the middle of 2019. 

参考译文：华为表示，这款手机起价高达2299欧元（约合2600美元），将于2019年中正式发售。

start at a price of。表示起价多少。whopping这个词表示“庞大的，异常大的”，通常放在名词或数字签名，这里用a whopping price of来表示价格尤其高昂。我们在高斋CATTI和MTI翻译全年班课程中也有遇到过whopping这个词：up by a whopping 538% for those who entered based on work experience凭工作经验申请的人数激增538%。

或者像另一句话那样：The price of the Mate X will start at 2299 euros,roughly $2600.
