David Goodall, 104, Scientist Who Fought to Die on His Terms, Ends His Life
Mr. Goodall spoke on Wednesday before a phalanx journalists and photographers in Basel, Switzerland. That the inquisitors had come from around the globe to hear what would be most likely the last public words of the man once called Australia’s oldest working scientist was evidence that his campaign to end his life had captivated audiences worldwide.
phalanx 美 [ˈfeˌlæŋks, ˈfælˌæŋks]
1、N-COUNT 方阵
A phalanx is a group of soldiers or police who are standing or marching close together ready to fight.
A phalanx of people is a large group who are brought together for a particular purpose.
“Body-guards had formed a solid phalanx around the singer so that photographers couldn't get to her.”
Basel,
captivate 美 [ˈkæptəˌvet]
VERB 迷住;使…着迷
If you are captivated by someone or something, you find them fascinating and attractive.
“I was captivated by her brilliant mind”,
“That the inquisitors had come from around the globe to hear what would be most likely the last public words of the man once called Australia’s oldest working scientist was evidence that his campaign to end his life had captivated audiences worldwide.”
1)that was evidence.
“That the inquisitors had come from around the globe to hear what would be most likely the last public words of the man once called Australia’s oldest working scientist ”, that引导的实际上是一个主语从句。
to hear what …,what引导的是一个宾语从句,是hear的内容。
2)the evidence showed that his campaign to end his life had captivated audiences worldwide.
“ evidence that his campaign to end his life had captivated audiences worldwide” ,
Mr. Goodall spoke on Wednesday / before a phalanx journalists and photographers /in Basel, Switzerland. That / the inquisitors had come from around the globe / to hear/ what would be most likely the last public words / of the man / once called Australia’s oldest working scientist / was evidence / that his campaign to end his life had captivated audiences worldwide.
