On the evening of May 23 EST, the new Chinese Ambassador to the United States of America Xie Feng arrived at Washington, D.C. and spoke to Chinese and U.S. media. Here is the full text of Ambassador Xie’s remarks:
我很荣幸受习近平主席委派，出任中华人民共和国驻美利坚合众国第十二任特命全权大使。
I am greatly honored to be appointed by President Xi Jinping as the 12th Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to the United States of America.
我是中国人民的代表，为了捍卫中国利益而来，这是我的神圣职责。我是中国人民的使者，为了增进中美交流合作而来，这是我的重要使命。30年前，我开始参与中美关系。30年后的今天，我依然相信，一个健康稳定的中美关系，符合两国共同利益，是国际社会的共同期盼，也是对世界和平与繁荣作出的重大贡献。
As a representative of the Chinese people, I have come here to safeguard the interests of China, and I take this as my sacred responsibility. As an envoy of the Chinese people, I have come here to enhance China-U.S. exchanges and cooperation, and I take this as my important mission. I started working on China-U.S. relations three decades ago. Thirty years later today, I still believe that a sound and stable China-U.S. relationship is in the interest of both countries. It is also a shared expectation of the international community and a major contribution to world peace and prosperity.
毋庸讳言，当前中美存在深刻分歧，两国关系遭遇严重困难，面临严峻挑战。回顾过去半个多世纪，中美关系就是一部历经风雨但不断克难前行的历史。今天的中美关系已经大到不能倒，双方谁也不可能改变谁，谁也不可能取代谁。合则两利，斗则俱伤而且会让全世界遭殃。中美能否处理好彼此关系，将决定两国的明天和世界的未来。全世界都在看着我们。
Obviously, there are profound differences between the two countries, and the relationship is faced with serious difficulties and challenges. Then this relationship has gone through many twists and turns in the past half century, yet it has always been able to move ahead. The relationship is too important for us to let it fail. Neither side can change or replace the other. Working together, both will come out as winners; fighting each other, both will lose, and the world will be hurt as well. Whether China and the United States can manage the relationship properly is consequential to the future of our two countries and our planet. The world is watching us.
中美关系再次站在历史十字路口。在这样一个关键时刻出任中国驻美大使，我深感使命光荣但责任重大。中美都是伟大的国家，中美人民都是伟大的人民。我们应该顺应时代潮流，摒弃冷战思维和零和博弈，敞开胸襟，相向而行，以实际行动落实习近平主席和拜登总统达成的重要共识，探索新时期中美正确相处之道，相互尊重，和平共处，合作共赢，让两国人民放心，让国际社会安心。
The China-U.S. relationship has once again come to a historical crossroads. My appointment at such a critical moment means to me not only honor, but also enormous responsibilities. Both China and the United States are great countries, and both Chinese and Americans are great peoples. We should keep pace with the trend of the times and reject Cold War mentality and zero-sum game, and open our heart and move forward in the same direction. We should take concrete actions to deliver on the common understandings between President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden, and explore the right way to get along with each other in the new era. We should uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation. We should make the two peoples feel assured and set the world at ease.
道阻且长，行则将至。我和我的同事们将牢记习近平主席的嘱托，迎难而上，埋头苦干，担当作为，不辱使命。
Long and arduous as the journey is, we will get to the destination as long as we take real steps. My colleagues and I will keep in mind the instructions of President Xi Jinping, carry out our duties and responsibilities and live up to our mission with diligence and fortitude.
我期待着与美国各界广泛接触、坦诚沟通，期待着大家的支持、参与和贡献。
I look forward to having extensive engagement and candid communication with people from all sectors in the United States. I look forward to your support, input and contribution.
