Who is The God Of Wealth in China? 

On the fifth day of Chinese Lunar New Year, it is a tradition for the Chinese to invite and worship the God of Wealth. People set off firecrackers to welcome the God of Wealth back home in the early morning. That's why we can keep hearing the sound of firecrackers.

Many stores open on this day after Chinese New Year holiday. Some religious store owners prepare fruit, flowers, candy, tea, candles and animal sacrifices on the table to worship the God of Wealth. Some even invite a lion dance coupe to celebrate the opening ceremony. The mascot of the God of Wealth will enter the store. The store owner will give the mascot a Red Envelope with money inside.

Who is the God of Wealth?

The answer is more than one God of Wealth in the Chinese society. Some selected gods are from the novel of Feng-Shen Bang written in the Ming Dynasty. The characters are historical figures as well as religious gods, goddesses, devils, demons and immortals from Chinese mythology.

Chao Kung-Ming 赵公明

The God of Wealth is Chao Kung-Ming. Before the book of Feng-Shen Bang, Chao Kung-Ming had magic power and was in charge of wind, thunder and rain. Once he was also in charge of plague. That means he can save or take away people's lives. Later, he became a general of millions of ghosts. He had a black face and wore combat uniform with helmet.

In the Feng-Shen Bang, Chiang Tze-Ya姜子牙 delegated Chao Kung-Ming as the officer of Dragon-Tiger Black Hall. From then, Chao Kung-Ming was in charge of business of gold, sliver, and jewelry.

Kuan Yu 关羽

The most popular God of Wealth is Kuan Yu who was a general in the Three Kingdoms Period. His trademark is the red face, long beard, long whiskers and green battle uniform.

People remembered his brave and fighting skill, faith, righteousness, loyalty to friends, and act of justice. Chinese people believe that his spirit can protect themselves and repel bad luck. He was treated as the God of War before the Ming Dynasty.

Five Different Gods of Wealth 五路财神

The God of Wealth brings people wealth. Legend has it that Five Gods of Wealth had the same birthday and met in a temple. They came to the temple for the same purpose: to pray for luck of wealth, so they became very close friends. Later, all of them became rich because of successful businesses. Five of them donated money to build a new temple. They were entitled Five Gods of Wealth after death.

Five Different Gods of Wealth come from different directions - East, West, South, North and Center. No matter where you go, one of them will be there for you.
