首先要了解原文：结合语境

翻译是对另一种文字的理解。但仅仅理解文字远远不够。文字有表面的含义和其背后的含义。翻译时不能含糊其辞，更不能不求甚解。翻译还需考虑到的问题就是语境。

英语是一种横向的语言，比如，spring 这个词，含义非常多。可以指“春天，喷泉，小溪”，甚至“弹簧”，继而引申为“弹力”，“反弹”这样的意思。英语单词表意通常是从具体到抽象，往往一词多意。所以，如果没有上下文的语境，想准确的理解字面意思真正的含义是非常难的。

文中有例为证：

An Englishman who had just landed in China entered a restaurant to appease the pangs of hunger. Unfortunately he knew no Chinese and the waiter knew no English; so they were both thrown on mother’s wit. 

John Chinaman articulated “Bowwow,” to which John Bull moved his head from right to left. Then the waiter said: “Quack, quack!” to which the customer moved his head from sky to earth, and the inner man was soon satisfied.

句中，“landed”一词有很多的意思。作名词表示“陆地，土地，国家”等。作动词表示“登陆，着陆，卸载货物”等。在本段中是作动词用。

A. Land及物动词的用法时，通常人或船只做主语。

The pilot landed the helicopter in a rice field.

飞行员将直升飞机降落在一片稻田里。

The ship landed the goods at New York.

这船将货卸在纽约。

尤其要注意的一点是，表示飞机降落或着陆，land用作不及物动词，通常用 airplane，aircraft，helicopter 做主语，如果是人作主语，就是坐船登陆上岸。

如：

The airplane landed safely in Egypt.

飞机安全地降落到埃及。

The aircraft landed three minutes before its expected arrival time.

飞行器比预计的时间提前三分钟到达。

The helicopter landed on the building’s roof for saving people from fire.

直升飞机降落在楼顶的天台上来救援受灾人员。

在本文中，An Englishman who had just landed in China这个人是坐船登陆的。

the pangs of hunger：饥饿的痛苦感受

B. pang 表示突然而强烈的情感，如孤独，疼痛，饥饿等。例如：

a pang of jealousy

突然涌来的嫉妒

a pang of regret

一阵悔恨

hunger pangs

阵阵饥饿感

在本文中，我们可以稍作处理译为“肚皮饿的发慌”或“饥肠辘辘”都可以。

C. the mother’s wit：天资聪慧

wit 名词，表示智力，才智，机智等。

mother’s wit 表示与生俱来的的聪明，天生的智慧。在本文中，我们结合上下文译为：靠着天生的聪明劲儿。

D. the inner man：饥肠辘辘的肠胃

这个词的字面意思是“人的内心”或“内心的那个人”。在这显然不是这个意思。文中用了比喻的手法，把饥饿的肠胃比作“the inner man”。更深层的意思是这个饥肠辘辘的人现在是最接近自己内心感受的人。
