原文:The mission statement of Bilibili, often dubbed “China’s YouTube”, stands out for its modesty. Instead of promising to change the world, the firm aspires merely to “enrich the everyday life of young generations in China”. If user figures are a guide, the Chinese young feel enriched. In the last quarter of 2020 the number of people who used the service at least once a month shot up by half from a year earlier, to 202m. Nearly nine in ten were under the age of 35. Videos on the platform, which range from sports highlights to self-help lectures and everything in between, attract an average of 1.2bn daily views.
01
The mission statement of Bilibili, often dubbed “China’s YouTube”, stands out for its modesty.
1. mission statement:
或sth be dubbed... Beijingers are accustomed to heavy pollution, but Monday marked some of the worst conditions since a thick smog descended in 2012, dubbed the “airpocalypse”.
The local press has dubbed the school “the rich club”. Members certainly enjoy rich benefits.
This is a particular worry for the poor and underemployed in Africa and India, where industrialisation has stalled at low levels of income—a phenomenon dubbed “premature deindustrialisation” by Dani Rodrik of Harvard University.
Climate change should not be seen as an insurmountable problem.
3. 中国版:也可以用China’s answer to,如Baidu, China’s answer to Google。
在今天这里stand out for中的for则引出原因,stand out表示突出,比如金融时报例句:There is thus a broad trend towards high- quality business education in Asia, among which some nations in the region stand out.
Like many learners he came from a small town with no top piano teachers. Yet he stood out and made it to Gulangyu’s music school.
For some Chinese users, Moocs are an additional credential which can set them apart from the pack of other job applicants — students can pay around $90 to receive certificates which are increasingly recognised by employers.
5. 注意:its modesty中的its指的是the mission statement,而不是Bilibili。
02
Instead of promising to change the world, the firm aspires merely to “enrich the everyday life of young generations in China”.
Instead of rushing at life, I wanted something more meaningful.
2. aspires merely to:aspire to sth的英文解释If you aspire to something such as an important job, you have a strong desire to achieve it. 也就是aspire to sth中的sth一般指职位或职业生涯之类的,如柯林斯词典例句:people who aspire to public office. She aspired to a scientific career.
aspire to do sth表示渴望或希望干某事,如:He aspired to be their next leader.
今天这里aspires merely to “enrich ...”就是aspire to do sth的用法,表示希望干某事。 Aspiring musicians need hours of practice every day.
I go swimming every day in order to keep fit.
03
If user figures are a guide, the Chinese young feel enriched.
At the risk of being repetitive, I will say again that statistics are only a guide.
2. the Chinese young:the+adj(young)表一类人,the Chinese young可以替换为Chinese youngsters,比如经济学人在描述中国年轻人出国留学时是这样说的:For Chinese youngsters who can raise the cash, study abroad looks attractive.
The study of science has enriched all our lives.
He used his position to enrich himself.
Both Europe and the US are wrecking the planet to enrich their people, yet cannot even enrich most of them. Only this winter did British average wages briefly regain their pre-crisis level of 2007. Now other European countries may drop below that bar.
今天这里的enrich表示丰富,和前一句“enrich the everyday life of young generations in China”中enrich一样意思。
04
In the last quarter of 2020 the number of people who used the service at least once a month shot up by half from a year earlier, to 202m.
1. 句子结构分析:主干是the number of people shot up by half to 202m。其中who used the service at least once a month是people的定语从句;In the last quarter of 2020是时间状语。
They provided their skills for little reward, except the glory of an on-screen credit, to streaming services that allowed free access or offered super-cheap subscriptions.
Since then, many other such outfits have gone underground or disbanded. For many internet users, this has been a sad moment.
3. the number of people who used the service at least once a month字面意思就是“每月至少使用一次B站的用户数”,有一个专业说法叫作“月活跃用户数量”刚好与之对应。
Governments around the world took measures to tackle the worst economic crisis in decades as unemployment shot up.
如果是飙升至,那就是shot up to。
5. 固定句型:the number of sb increase by/to句型很常见,在今天这里“增长”使用的是shot up,表示激增。
By 2020 the number of elderly people aged 60 and above in China is expected to exceed 255 million, accounting for 17.8% of the total population.
6. from a year earlier表示“同比”,表示变化的动词+变化数值/幅度+from a year ago/earlier,如金融时报例句:
While April exports had risen 24 per cent from a year ago, industrial production disappointed just a 7 per cent increase.
05
Nearly nine in ten were under the age of 35.
1. 年龄的表达:under the age of表示多少岁以下,反义词是above the age of。
2. Nearly nine in ten were under the age of 35:看到这个,我想给大家说下这个细节点:“one in 数字+可数名词”的谓语动词单复数均可,比如纽约时报对希腊年轻人的不充分就业描述的时候就用到了one in four young people are,此时是把主语核心看成了25%:
Those who do manage to find a job often find themselves trapped in one tenuous, low-skilled job after the next. The minimum monthly salary – which most graduates earn – has dropped from 800 euros ($920) to 600 euros ($690) since the start of the crisis, and one in four young people are classed as living in poverty.
Nonetheless, at least one in five Americans regularly chooses gluten-free foods, according to a 2015 poll. Sales of products with gluten-free labels rose to $23 billion worldwide in 2014, up from $11.5 billion worldwide in 2010.
According to one recent survey of 3,500 remote workers, one in five struggles with loneliness.
Census figures for China show that around one in five women aged 25-29 is unmarried.
06
Videos on the platform, which range from sports highlights to self-help lectures and everything in between, attract an average of 1.2bn daily views.
Videos on the platform attract an average of 1.2bn daily views.其中,on the platform是videos的后置定语。which range from sports highlights to self-help lectures and everything in between是Videos的定语从句。
2. 固定句型:sth range from ... to ... and everything in between是一个固定句型,表示“…… Coca-Cola's 47 products in China range from its trademark Coke to Ice Dew bottled water, and nearly everything in between.
The US Open is one of the four golf majors and is a highlight in the sporting calendar.
For working couples, Japan’s efforts to combat the spread of the virus — encouraging teleworking and asking residents to stay inside — have highlighted disparities in the division of domestic work that shape households across the globe but are especially pronounced in Japanese society.
The growing popularity of government jobs highlights the challenges faced by China’s labour market as employers cut back on hiring, driving the jobless rate to above pre-virus levels despite a recovering economy.
4. Self-help可以表示自救,也可以表示自立、自我成长、自我精进,比如a society that encourages competitiveness and self-help among the very young.
In Britain, the number of practising solicitors has increased by an average of 4 per cent a year since 1979.
