武汉中心医院医生李文亮在抗击新型冠状病毒感染的肺炎疫情工作中不幸感染,经全力抢救无效,于2020年2月7日凌晨去世,年仅33岁。

最新一期经济学人Obituary版块对此进行了报道，今天公众号“高斋外刊双语精读”带大家大概看看这篇报道（时间有限，这篇文章就只做一些大概的讲解），标题叫作Li Wenliang, who raised the alarm“吹哨人李文亮”。
raise the alarm是一个固定表达，表示“发出警报，拉响警报，敲警钟”。“发出警报，敲响警钟”还可以说sound an alarm，give a warning。之前在外刊报道里面还使用了warnof/about the virus。
经济学人精读：“吹哨人”李文亮
经济学人在介绍新型冠状病毒的文章中有这么一句：
they promptly sounded an alarm about an unusual cluster of cases of pneumonia
他们其实很快发出了警告，称发现了多个不寻常肺炎病例。
今天的这篇文章开头先介绍了李文亮的个人生活：工作忙碌，但忙里偷闲喜欢在微博上分享个人生活。

原文：
BUSY THOUGH he was as an ophthalmologist at Wuhan Central hospital, rushed off his feet, Li Wenliang never missed a chance to chat about his favourite things on Weibo. Food, in particular. A big basket of chicken, washed down with a Coke, was the peak of his existence.
高斋参考译文：
李文亮是武汉市中心医院的一名眼科医生，工作时总忙得不可开交，但一有时间他就会在微博上分享自己喜欢的东西，尤其是美食。买上一大桶炸鸡，再来一杯可乐，那就是他最幸福的时刻。
1. ophthalmologist 美[ˌɑːfθəˈmɑːlədʒɪst]：眼科医生。
2. 高斋语法讲解：
BUSY THOUGH he was as an ophthalmologist：这个属于倒装句，把形容词busy提在though前面了，是为了强调busy，正常语序是though he was busy as an ophthalmologist。
3. 固定表达：rushed off one’s feet是一个固定表达，意思是“忙碌的，匆忙的，忙的不可开交的”，它的同义词是have one’s hands full。
所以今天这个rushed off his feet也可以说with his hands full。
4. 固定表达：never missed a chance to可以当作一个固定句型来记，表示“一有机会就、一有时间就”。

文章接着说道：：
At Wuhan Central the pay was bad and the hours punishing, but as long as his patients were satisfied, he was happy.
武汉市中心医院工资不高，工作时间又长，但只要病人满意，他就觉得开心。
1. the pay was bad表示“工资不高，工资低”。bad也可以说low，poor。
2. the hours punishing是省去了were，完整的是the hours were punishing。
3. 同义词替换：the hours punishing表示“工作时间长，异常忙碌的”。注意，punishing在这里跟“惩罚，处罚”没有关系，它表示“艰难持久的，繁忙的，使人筋疲力尽的”。
punishing在之前公众号“高斋外刊双语精读”推送996文章的时候见过：
China’s notorious 996 work culture=China’s punishing “996” overtime work culture=China’s grueling “996” work schedule.
可见，punishing和grueling是一个意思，都表示“使人筋疲力尽的”。
《华尔街日报》上有句话是这么说的：
Traders worked punishing hours in a drab office space with long rows of computer terminals and phones.
交易员们在单调乏味、摆满一排排电脑终端和电话的办公室里从早忙到晚。
所以“从早忙到晚”就可以说work punishing hours。
总结：
“忙的不可开交，从早忙到晚”可以说work punishing hours，还可以说be rushed off one’s feet，have one’s hands full。
前面一直在叙述李文亮的个人生活，包括职业和个人习惯。文章接下来开始引出李文亮发现新型肺炎疫情的始末。

Since he shared every passing observation online, it was not surprising that on December 30th he put up a post about an odd cluster of pneumonia cases at the hospital.
高斋参考译文：
李文亮平时就喜欢把生活中观察到的事情发到网上，所以12月30号他把在医院发现多个异常肺炎病例的情况发在网上也就不足为奇了。
1. every passing observation当作固定表达来记，表示“生活中观察到的所有事情”。注意observation在这里是不可数名词，表示“观察”之意。
observation既可以作可数名词也可以作不可数名词。它作可数名词时表示“（尤指据所见、所闻、所读而作的）评论”，如make a few general observations about the report 针对报告作几点概括性的评论。
今天这个observation表示“观察”。
2. 同义词替换：it was not surprising that当作固定句型来记，表示“……也就不足为奇了”。还可以说it is no surprise that。
3. 同义表达：an odd cluster of pneumonia cases表示“多个异常肺炎病例”，也可以说an unusual cluster of cases of pneumonia。
在同学群的聊天记录中，李文亮是这么说的：
He headed the post: “Seven cases of SARS in the Huanan Wholesale Seafood Market”. That was his mistake.
“华南海鲜批发市场出现了7例sars病毒。”他这句话不严谨，存在失误。
1. headed在这里是动词，本意是“标题为”，这里就是指李文亮在微信群里说的关键的一句话。
2. wholesale表示“批发的，大规模买卖的”，如wholesale prices 批发价；wholesale markets 批发市场。
3. That was his mistake他这句话不严谨，存在失误：因为并没有确定是sars，当他意识到这个失误后，本想改正，可是消息已经传开了。

这让李文亮成了最初的“造谣者”，经济学人继续写道：
原文：
his first post had already gone viral, with his name and occupation undeleted, so that in the middle of the night he was called in for a dressing down at the hospital, and January 3rd he was summoned to the police station. There he was accused of spreading rumours and subverting the social order.
高斋参考译文：
那份微信截图已经传播出去了，他的名字和职业信息都还在上面。李文亮当天夜里被叫到医院约谈，1月3号又被传唤到了派出所，他被指控散播谣言，扰乱社会秩序。
1. 同义词替换：go viral字面意思就是“像病毒一样传播开来”，表示“迅速传播，广泛传播，走红”。
如《华尔街日报》上说：
Mr. Cochran's email went viral inside the agency minutes after it was sent.
科克兰的电子邮件发出几分钟后就在公司里迅速传开来。
2. 固定表达：a dressing down是固定表达，意思是“训斥，痛骂”。其动词表达是dress down。
“当众训斥某人”就可以说dress sb down in public。
“训斥，痛骂”还可以说get a ticking off，get a severe telling off，is rebuked。
3. was summoned to the police station：被传唤到警察局。
be summoned to sp表示“被叫到某地，被传唤到某地”。比如求职时说“被叫到了面试的房间”就可以说be summoned to the interview room。
4. was accused of spreading rumours and subverting the social order：被指控散播谣言，扰乱社会秩序。
be accused of doing sth很常见了，表示“被指控做某事”；
“散播谣言，散布谣言”是spread rumours，可以当作固定表达记下来；“造谣者，散布谣言者”可以说rumor-monger。
拓展：-monger常用以构成复合词，表示“……商人，……贩子，专事……的人”。比如“鱼贩”就可以说fish monger；“爱传闲话的人，爱说长道短的人”可以说gossip-monger。

然而事实上李文亮并非“造谣者”，而是真正的“吹哨人”。正如经济学人上所说：
原文：
He had been right to raise the alarm. The authorities were still denying that there was human-to-human transmission, and that was just wrong.
李文亮做出了正确的警示，而湖北政府当时否认该病毒人传入，那才是错误的决定。
1. The authorities有the，表示特指，在这里具体指的是“湖北政府”。
2. 专业表达：human-to-human transmission表示“人传人；人际传播；在人与人之间传播”，也可以说person-to-person transmission。
denying that there was human-to-human transmission也可以改写成：denying that the virus can be passed directly from person to person。

不幸的是，李文亮也感染了新型肺炎。据李文亮自述，他是在接诊新冠病毒肺炎患者后，1月10号开始出现咳嗽症状，11号发热，12号住院。
经济学人对李文亮的患病过程的描述：
原文：
by January 10th he had begun to cough. On February 1st a nucleic-acid test showed positive for the new coronavirus.
1月10号李文亮开始出现咳嗽症状，2月1日核酸检验结果呈阳性，最终确诊。
1. 专业术语：a nucleic-acid test showed positive for the new coronavirus核酸检测呈阳性。
“核酸检测结果”单独来说就是a nucleic acid test result；
我们说，病原核酸检测呈阳性，才能被确诊为新型冠状病毒肺炎。
对此，外刊上是这么说的：
a positive nucleic test result is the only way to confirm a case of coronavirus.
“阳性”是positive，反过来“阴性”就是negative。
“某人核酸检测阴性”就可以说have a negative nucleic acid test result。
2. ……的test用介词for，所以这里是a nucleic-acid test for the new coronavirus
在接受媒体采访时，被问及康复后有什么计划，李文亮说：“恢复以后还是要上一线，疫情还在扩散，不想当逃兵！至于疫情以后的事，还没想太多。”然而李文亮的病情并没有好转……
吹哨人李文亮离开了这个世界，但他的精神永存。我们的世界也需要更多这样的吹哨人。

在接受媒体采访时，被问及康复后有什么计划，李文亮说：“恢复以后还是要上一线，疫情还在扩散，不想当逃兵！至于疫情以后的事，还没想太多。”然而李文亮的病情并没有好转……
吹哨人李文亮离开了这个世界，但他的精神永存。我们的世界也需要更多这样的吹哨人。
正如文章最后所说：
There had to be more transparency. The truth was important. A healthy society should never have just one voice.
