英国政府2012年起对教育进行了改革，取消了对学生录取人数的限制，同时每年学费上涨至9000英镑，使得大学想竭尽所能招收更多的学生，大量发放无条件offer（学生即使达不到要求的A-level成绩，也可顺利进入大学）。A-level是英国学生的大学入学考试课程，相当于我们的高考。今天我们将学习5个精彩表达。
1.“secure”的熟词偏意。
大学的发展取决于其学生数量：Each institution’s future depends on securing enough students.从这句话中我们可以学到secure这个词的一个新用法。secure作动词常表示“保护，保卫”，这里是“经过努力争取，获取到”的意思。比如：“secure a degree”就是“拿到学位”，还比如，“占座位时占个靠前的位置”就可以说“secure a place at the front”。原文的“securing enough students”表示“招收到足够数量的学生”。“securing”在这里相当于“enrolling或attracting”。
2.“take”的熟词偏意。
英国教育政策发生了变化。此前，每所大学的招生人数都有限制：This reflects a change in government policy.
