经济学人每日一句：伦敦市最脏乱的一个区

《经济学人》曾经对伦敦苏活区的变化有过一篇报道，它的标题是London’s seediest district hints at some of the ways the capital is changing。

苏活区(Soho)位于英国伦敦西部的次级行政区西敏市(Westminster)境内，位置紧贴伦敦的金融区Mayfair，每天下班时候都有很多人从Mayfair到苏活喝酒、消遣和听音乐，使苏活区渐渐变成一个让世界各地游客云集的小区。

Through throngs of people to a bar dimly lit by brown lights, drinkers navigate a cocktail menu around 20 pages long, with eye-watering prices. 

穿过拥挤的人群进入尽是昏暗灯光的酒吧，酒客们浏览着足足20多页的鸡尾酒菜单，菜单上的价格也贵的令人咋舌。

从这句话中我们可以学到这样几个知识点：

1. “拥挤的人群”：throngs of people。“throngs of”表示“一群……人”。如金融时报上这句：The stretch is always heaving with throngs of working professionals and expatriates dancing and drinking at the pubs and clubs. 这里总是挤满了一群又一群的上班族和外国移民，在酒馆和夜总会里跳舞畅饮。“throng”这个词也可以作动词，表示“涌向，蜂拥至某地”，如：throng into the hall 涌进大厅。

2. “灯光昏暗的，灯光暗淡的”：dimly lit，当作一个固定表达来记。苏格兰小说家及剧作家詹姆斯·巴利创作的著名长篇小说《彼得·潘》中有这么一句：The fire was warm, however, and the nursery dimly lit by three night-lights, and presently the sewing lay on Mrs. 炉火暖融融的，育儿室里半明半暗地点着三盏夜灯。它也可以当作形容词，如a dimly lit room 一个灯光昏暗的房间。

3. “navigate”的熟词偏意，“浏览菜单”：navigate a menu。“navigate”的常见含义是“导航，航行，确定方向位置”，如to navigate by the stars根据星辰确定航向；在这里是“（在互联网或网站上）浏览”的意思。比如金融时报上这句：I found it far easier to navigate the digital Wall Street Journal on the iPad than on a laptop. 我发现，在iPad上浏览电子版的华尔街日报就比在笔记本电脑上浏览要方便得多。原句的“navigate a cocktail menu”就是“浏览鸡尾酒菜单”的意思。“浏览”也可以说browse、view。

5. “价格高昂；价格高得令人咋舌”：eye-watering prices。“eye-watering”意思是“（高得）难以想象的，令人心痛的，催人泪下的”。如金融时报上所说：Losing my job now would be bad timing–I have a young child, a pregnant wife and an eye-watering mortgage. 如果我现在失去工作，情况就会非常糟糕。我有年幼的孩子，怀孕的妻子，还有不堪重负的抵押贷款。还比如，eye-watering fee 巨额费用。
