尊敬的大卫·格林纳韦校长，

Professor Sir David Greenaway,

各位诺丁汉大学校友，

Dear Nottingham Alumni,

女士们、先生们：

Ladies and Gentlemen:

很高兴出席“诺丁汉大学与中国”招待会。昨天我荣幸地接受了诺大授予的荣誉博士学位。因此，今天我不仅以中国驻英大使的身份出席招待会，我还是诺大一位新校友。

It gives me great pleasure to join you for today's reception. Yesterday, I had the honour to be awarded the University of Nottingham's honorary doctorate. Today, I am here not only in the capacity of Chinese Ambassador to the UK, but also as an Nottingham alumnus.

中国人很讲究“缘分”，我们常说“有缘千里来相会”。我和诺大就很有缘分，来英7年多，我3次访问诺大，5次出席诺大活动，这在我访问的英国大学中是不多见的。诺大与中国也很有“缘分”，主要体现在四个方面：

In China, people often ascribe coincidence to "destiny". We often say: "If two are destined to meet, they will, no matter how far apart they may be". Between the Nottingham University and myself, I believe there is such a "magic destiny". Over the past seven years and more since I became Ambassador to the UK, I have been to Nottingham three times and attended five Nottingham events. If I think of all the British universities I have visited, this is truly unusual. But this is not by any means a coincidence. This is "magic destiny" between Nottingham and China.

首先，诺大是中英合作的先行者。2001年，诺大聘请中国科学院院士、原复旦大学校长杨福家教授为第六任校监，成为英国历史上第一个聘请中国人为校监的大学。这是中英教育合作史上的创举，在两国教育界引起很大反响。诺大从此与中国结下了“不了情缘”。

First, Nottingham University was a pioneer of China-UK educational cooperation. In 2001, Professor Yang Fujia, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of China's Fudan University, was appointed the sixth Chancellor of Nottingham.

Nottingham therefore became the very first British university to have a Chinese Chancellor.

This has been unprecedented in China-UK educational cooperation.

This was big news in the education communities of both countries.

And this was how the "magic destiny" between Nottingham and China began.

第二，诺大是中外联合办学的首创者。诺大是最早进入中国的外国大学。2004年，诺大与浙江万里学院联合创办中国第一所中外合办大学—“宁波诺丁汉大学”。正如习近平主席所说：“宁波诺丁汉大学的创建和成立，开创了中国高等教育与国外优质高等教育资源相结合的先河，为中国教育走向世界创造了一种全新的模式”。该校的创立被中国教育部列为《奠基中国--新中国教育60年》60件大事之一，成为中外合作办学的成功典范。13年来，该校从最初仅有254名学生，发展到今天拥有来自70多个国家和地区7300多名学生，逾12000名毕业生从该校走出校门、走向世界。微博@高斋翻硕 公众号:高斋翻译学堂

Second, Nottingham University was a trail-blazer in China-foreign joint university campus. As the first among all foreign universities to come to China for cooperation, Nottingham joined hands with Zhejiang Wanli University in 2004 to build the first ever China-foreign joint campus. That was the University of Nottingham, Ningbo.

As President Xi Jinping once said: "The founding of the University of Nottingham, Ningbo is the very first joint effort between Chinese and foreign higher learning institutions to pool their respective educational strengths. It creates a new model for a world-class and international education system in China."

At the sixtieth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, Ningbo campus was listed by China's Ministry of Education as one of the 60 most influential events in the field of education.

Nottingham Ningbo has been a successful example of international cooperation.

13 years ago, there were only 254 students at the Ningbo campus. Today, Nottingham Ningbo is home to 7,300 students from over 70 different countries and regions and has a community of 12,000 alumni all over the world.

第三，诺大是中英教育合作的建设者。长期以来，诺大为推进中英教育合作做出了积极贡献：诺丁汉大学与清华大学、浙江大学等中国数十所大学建立了校际联系；在诺大的中国学生已达2000余人；诺大成立的当代中国研究学院、中国政策研究所和孔子学院，成为英国和其他西方国家研究和了解中国的重要窗口。

Third, Nottingham University has been a contributor to China-UK educational cooperation. For over a decade, Nottingham has been working actively to advance the educational cooperation between our two countries.

Nottingham has set up ties with Qinghua University, Zhejiang University and dozens of other Chinese universities.

Nottingham is now home to 2,000 Chinese students.

By establishing the Study of Contemporary China, China Policy Institute and Confucius Institute, Nottingham has become an important window through which Britain and other western countries can study and understand China.

第四，诺大是中英友谊的传播者。诺大与中国的成功合作不仅体现在教育领域，还体现在促进中英两国人民和地方的交流与合作。宁波市与诺丁汉市缔结为友好城市，就是源于宁波诺丁汉大学的建立。诺丁汉市建立了一座“宁波友谊大桥”，格林纳韦校长被授予“宁波荣誉市民”称号。在宁波诺丁汉大学筹建过程中，格林纳韦校长平均每3个月就要去一趟宁波，为促进两市交流与合作做出了重要贡献。微博@高斋翻硕 公众号:高斋翻译学堂

Fourth, Nottingham University has been a promoter of China-UK friendship. The success of Nottingham's cooperation with China is not limited to the field of education. The success extends to wider areas of stronger people-to-people exchanges and city-to-city cooperation.

The establishment of the twin-city relationship between Ningbo and Nottingham is accredited to the founding of the Nottingham's Ningbo campus.

During the building of the Ningbo campus, Professor Sir David flew to China every three months on average. He was later awarded Honorary Citizen of Ningbo for his significant contribution to closer exchanges and cooperation between the two cities.

As a symbol of such close ties, a bridge in Nottingham is named "Ningbo Friendship Bridge" in hornour of this Chinese city.

女士们、先生们、朋友们，

Ladies and Gentlemen,

今年是中英建立大使级外交关系45周年，也是中英关系“黄金时代”深入发展之年。我欣喜地看到，中英教育合作持续深入，两国合作办学蓬勃发展。英国119所大学已与中国206所高校设立了370个本科及以上合作办学机构和项目，超过6.4万名中国学生在中国境内接受英国高等教育。过去40年，超过45万名中国学生来英求学，3.5万英国学生赴华学习。这些交流增进了两国青年一代的了解，加深了两国人民之间的友谊，为中英关系“黄金时代”注入了持久动力。

This year marks the 45th anniversary of China-UK Ambassadorial diplomatic ties. It is also a year for consolidating the China-UK Golden Era. I am most pleased to see the ever-deepening China-UK educational cooperation and the flourishing of joint courses, joint projects and joint  programmes by China-UK universities.

119 British universities and 206 Chinese universities have set up 370 joint educational institutions and projects at or above undergraduate level.

So far, more than 64,000 Chinese students received British education in China.

In the past four decades, more than 450,000 Chinese students studied in the UK and 35,000 British students studied in China.

Through such exchanges, our young people have come to understand each other better. The people of China and Britain have deepened friendship. The China-UK Golden Era has gained momentum.

英国著名作家和评论家塞缪尔·约翰逊曾说，“完成伟大的事业不在于能力，而在于坚韧不拔的毅力。”从2008年到2017年，格林纳韦校长带领诺大坚持不懈、孜孜以求，走过了不平凡的历程，取得了辉煌的成就，为中英两国教育界之间架起了友谊之桥、合作之桥、共赢之桥。我想借此机会，衷心感谢格林纳韦校长为促进中英教育交流和两国人民友谊做出的卓越贡献。我希望并相信，在中英关系“黄金时代”，诺大将继续深化对华合作，推动中英教育交流合作不断迈上新台阶，续写中英教育“情缘”的新篇章！

Samuel Johnson once wrote: "Great works are performed not by strength, but by perseverance."

From 2008 to 2017, thanks to the leadership, commitment and perseverance of Professor Sir David, Nottingham University has come through an extraordinary journey and achieved remarkable achievements. It has built a bridge of friendship and a bridge of win-win cooperation between the educational communities of China and Britain.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Professor Sir David for his outstanding contribution to advancing the educational exchanges and friendship between China and Britain.

I hope that in the China-UK Golden Era, Nottingham University will continue to deepen its cooperation with China, bring China-UK educational exchanges and cooperation to a new high and write a new chapter for the "magic destiny" between China and Britain in our educational cooperation.
