汉译英回译
第一段讲解
第一段原文：中国面积大致相当于加拿大或美国，人口11亿，占全球人口的22%。
译文：
China: her size roughly that of Canada or the United States. Her population one billion one hundred million, 22 per cent of the planet’s human beings.
1. 这篇文章的特点是没有谓语，前面都是“China:”，所以这句其实就是China’s size is roughly that of Canada or the United States. Her population is one billion one hundred million, 22 per cent of the planet’s human beings.
2. “面积”size，也可以换为area或者territory。
3. “大致相当于”roughly，例如在高斋CATTI和MTI翻译系统班讲过这样一句：
Applicants, who must be between 18 and 35, are promised monthly salaries of at least 6,100 yuan ($890), roughly the wages at Foxconn when the going was good.
应聘者年龄须在18至35岁之间，岗位承诺月薪至少6100元（约合890美元），大致相当于富士康光景红火时的工资水平。
4. “11亿”one billion one hundred million，也可以说“1.1 billion” 。不过我觉得这是很早以前的文章了，现在大家看外刊其实多使用简洁的写法1.1. billion.
5. “占比”这里直接是用比例作补充成分22 per cent of the planet’s human beings.
6. “全球人口”the planet’s human beings，不过我觉得这是很早以前的文章了，现在大家看外刊其实多使用简洁的写法the world’s total population.
第二段讲解
第二段原文：中国非常年轻，60%的中国人年龄在25岁以下。中国又非常古老，具有数千年累积起来、现仍具有强大影响的历史，对往昔文明鼎盛的自豪激励着她迈步走向新技术时代。这个时代正在改变世界，改变中国。
译文：
China: very young, 60 per cent of the Chinese under 25 years of age. Very old, millennia of accumulated and still potent history, pride of remembered greatness motivating her march towards the new technological era which is changing the world, and changing her.
1. “25岁以下” under 25 years of age，外刊多见under age 25, under 25, under the age of 25.
2. “具有强大影响的历史” potent history，这里不用powerful因为powerful一般指的是“人”，和history不搭配。
3. 往昔文明鼎盛remembered greatness.
4. 激励着她迈步走向motivate one’s march towards，也可以说motivate one’s move towards.
5. “新技术时代” the new technological era，也可以说the new era of science and technology.
第三段讲解
第三段原文：中国的历史并不是一部单一的历史，而是由许多部历史组成，因为中国是由许多不同的民族组成的——总共有56个民族。然而她却是一个紧密完整的统一体。真是一个伟大的、自成一统的国家。
译文：
China: her history not unitary, but made up of many histories; as she is made up of many different peoples, altogether 56 nations. Yet she is a oneness, coherent, whole. THE GREAT WITHIN.
1. Unitary单一的；形成单一个体的；统一的，例如CATTI三笔真题班见过unitary state单一制国家。
2. “由……组成的”，is made up of ，例如：
Food is made up of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.
食物由碳水化合物、蛋白质和脂肪构成。
第四段讲解
第四段原文：中国的一部分地区是平原，旅行便利，为游览胜地。这里有最富庶、最先进的大都市：北京、天津、上海、南京、广州……肥沃的冲积平原似乎广阔无边，而实际还不到总领土的15%。中国的耕地面积只占世界耕地总面积的7%。她凭这么少的耕地却养活几乎占世界人口四分之一的人，真是一个了不起的成就！
译文：
There is a China of plains, easily traveled, a tourist delight. Here are the wealthiest, the most advanced metropolises: Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou...Fertile alluvial lowlands which seem vast, yet are less than 15 per cent of her total territory. And China’s arable, cultivable acres make up only seven per cent of the world’s total acreage. On this she feeds almost a quarter of the world’s people. A prodigious achievement!
1. alluvial英 [əˈluːviəl] 美 [əˈluːviəl] 冲积的，淤积的
2. acreage英 [ˈeɪkərɪdʒ] 美 [ˈeɪkərɪdʒ]（一大片）耕地;（以英亩计的）土地面积
3. prodigious英 [prəˈdɪdʒəs] 美 [prəˈdɪdʒəs] 。
“了不起的成就”A prodigious achievement，也可以说A remarkable achievement；An impressive achievement；Quite an accomplishment。
