Artificial intelligence is here — and it’s bringing new possibilities, while also raising questions.
Artificial intelligence is here. It’s bringing new possibilities, while also raising questions.
1. A.I. and big-data technology will remake/transform the world.
2. Companies aim to make a complicated world simpler through technology.
3. Companies can develop products and services that improve people’s lives. They will be more modest machines that will drive your car, translate foreign languages, organize your photos, recommend entertainment options and maybe diagnose your illnesses.
4. Baidu’s speech-recognition software — which can accomplish the difficult task of hearing tonal differences in Chinese dialects — is considered top of the class.
5. Think of a spreadsheet on steroids, trained on big data. These tools can outperform human beings at a given task.
6. New technologies have enabled people to be more productive, as the Internet and word processing have for office workers. More productive workers, in turn, earn more money and produce goods and services that improve lives.
1. The A.I. products that now exist are improving faster than most people realize and promise to radically transform our world, not always for the better.
2. There are fears that technology will displace/eliminate jobs and lead to mass unemployment. The technological breakthroughs of recent years — allowing machines to mimic the human mind — are enabling machines to do knowledge jobs and service jobs, in addition to factory and clerical work.
The technological breakthroughs of recent years, which allow machines to mimic the human mind, are enabling machines to do knowledge jobs and service jobs, in addition to factory and clerical work.
3. Machines are mastering ever more intricate tasks, such as translating texts or diagnosing illnesses.
Unlike the Industrial Revolution and the computer revolution, the A.I. revolution is not taking certain jobs (artisans, personal assistants who use paper and typewriters) and replacing them with other jobs (assembly-line workers, personal assistants conversant with computers). But instead it would create as many jobs as it destroyed.
Although some tasks are automatable, many others rely on human judgment.
There are certain human skills machines will probably never replicate, like common sense, adaptability and creativity.
