南华早报原文：His swarthy skin, big eyes, long eyelashes and thick but messy hair have proved winning features for Zhaxi Dingzhen, a 20-year-old native of a remote county in Sichuan province, after a short video of him released two weeks ago went viral on social media platform Douyin.

1. swarthy[ˈswɔːrði]：adj. 形容人皮肤黝黑的；深肤色的。如《飘》中对巴特勒船长外貌的描写：

Scarlett felt that she would strangle at the expression on Captain Butler'sswarthy piratical face.

看着巴特勒船长那张海盗般黝黑的脸上的表情，思嘉只觉得自己快要给闷死了。

2. messy hair表示凌乱的头发，messy表示“凌乱的；散乱的”。反过来，头发整整齐齐英文可以说neat hair。

3. 熟词偏义：winning常见的含义是“获胜的；赢的”，今天这里考察的是它的熟词偏义，表示“吸引人的；迷人的；可爱的”，我们说“某人脸上挂着迷人的微笑”，英文就可以说sb put on a winning smile。

4. prove有个常见灵活翻译，翻译为“是”，而不是“证明”，这里翻译为证明不通顺，应该翻译为“这些正是这个20岁小伙外表的迷人之处”。

5. 固定表达：go viral是个固定表达，表示（像病毒一样）得以广泛传播，流行，也就是我们常说的“迅速走红；突然走红；爆红”的意思。

go viral公众号上见过好几次了，比如这篇经济学人精读：中美贸易战 | 考研英语外刊双语中这句：

“If you want to talk, our door is wide open,” said an anchor on China’s most-watched news programme on May 13th, in a clip that went viral. “If you want to fight, we’ll fight you to the end.”

5月13日，主持人康辉在央视新闻联播中说道：“谈，大门敞开；打，奉陪到底”。这段视频便迅速登上热门。

丁真家乡——理塘县介绍

南华早报原文：Horse racing is a traditional activity in Dingzhen’s hometown in Litang county, which is mainly inhabited by the Tibetan ethnic minority and is located at around 4,000 metres (13,120 feet) above sea level. 

高斋参考译文：赛马是丁真家乡理塘县的一项传统活动。理塘县是少数民族藏族的一个聚居地，海拔约4000米。

1. 句子结构分析：这句主干是Horse racing is a traditional activity；which引导的定语从句修饰的是Litang county，其中is mainly inhabited by the Tibetan ethnic minority和is located at around 4,000 metres (13,120 feet) above sea level两部分并列。

2. horse racing：赛马。中间也可以不要空格，写为horseracing。

3. 固定搭配：be inhabited by表示“居住着……；是……的聚居地”，如a land inhabited by the prosperous few少数富人聚居之地；is mainly inhabited by即“是……的一个聚居地”。

张培基译《我的父母之乡》中就用到了这个短语，原句是：

我在故乡走的地方不多，但古迹、侨乡，到处可见。

I did not visit all the local attractions in Fuzhou. Everywhere we could find historical relics as well as villages and towns inhabited by relatives of overseas Chinese.

4. 固定搭配：数字+ meters/feet above sea level表示海拔高度。feet是foot的复数形式，表示英尺，约等于30.48厘米。记住，表示海拔的单位通常是metes和feet。

举个例子，海拔2300米，英文是2,300 metres above sea level。注意，英文的数字是三位一点，“2,300”中间的逗号不能丢。

some place is located at 数字+ meters/feet above sea level可以当作一个固定句型来记，表示这个地方的海拔高度，还可以说some place is at an elevation of 数字+meters/feet。例如：

我的家乡海拔2000米。

可以说：

My hometown is at an elevation of 2, 000 meters。

抢丁真，政府借力发展旅游

南华早报原文：The county’s authorities quickly sensed the opportunity brought by this new online celebrity. The state-owned Cultural Tourism Investment Development Company hired Dingzhen last week, offering him a job as “cultural ambassador” paying 3,500 yuan (US$530) a month with other benefits including insurance and a housing fund.

1. 固定表达：sense the opportunity是一个固定表达，表示“洞悉机会；嗅到一丝机会”。例如：投资者可能嗅到了一线机会。英文可以说Investors might sense an opportunity.

在抢丁真这件事上，各地政府表现出了高度的敏感性，希望借力发展当地旅游业和经济。

2. online celebrity：网络名人，也就是日常所说的“网红”。也可以说internet celebrity，online starlets，internet stars/celebrities，还可以直接用汉语拼音wanghong表示；在李子柒：隔离时期的田园“公主” | 纽约时报双语这篇里面我们就见过。

3. 固定搭配：a job as+职位，表示什么样的工作/职位。比如，一份医生的工作a job as a hospital doctor。其中job有时候也可以用role，如20年CATTI三笔真题中这句：

Through her returnship, Ms McDonnell gained a full-time role as an operations data consultant, handling projects within service management at O2.

还有固定表达do a good job as，表示可以做好什么。

网红带动经济发展

据新闻报道，一组数据显示，“理塘”二字的热度从11月20日起大涨，到11月最后一周，更是猛增620%。业内预测，理塘或成元旦旅行黑马目的地。《南华早报》中引用了理塘旅投副总经理高小平的话，原句如下：

“His popularity is helpful for promoting Litang and Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,” Gao was quoted as saying.

高斋参考译文：借用高小平的话来说：“丁真的走红有利于推广理塘县和甘孜藏族自治州。”

1. popularity：n. 表示受欢迎，流行，走红，人气。外刊精读翻译班第2期（12月21日开课）：拼团只需329元，适合MTI翻硕、CATTI和考研英语备考会讲到电子书vs纸质书，其中有这样一句话：

E-books’ declining popularity may signal that publishing, while not immune to technological upheaval, will weather the tidal wave of digital technology better than other forms of media, like music and television.

电子书受欢迎程度不断下降，这可以说明纸质书虽不能免于技术变革的影响，但相比音乐、电视等其它媒体形式更能承受数字技术浪潮的冲击。

这个declining popularity可以表示“人气下滑；受欢迎程度下降；普及度下跌；支持率下降”等等。

2. 固定搭配：sb be quoted as saying是一个固定搭配，表示“引用某人的话来说”，后面往往跟that从句，表示具体是什么话。举个词典上的例子：

Engel is quoted as saying that balanced people do not become artists.

引用恩格尔的话说就是理性的人是成不了艺术家的。

也可以像今天这个使用直接引语，结构为“...,” sb be quoted as saying.或者sb be quoted as saying, “...”.

旅游助力减贫

原文：Tourism has long been considered an effective vehicle of wider economic growth and development and therefore a potential means of poverty reduction. Tourism demand is linked to economic growth and economic growth reduces poverty. The primary means to poverty alleviation is through the creation of permanent jobs. The creation of tourism jobs could be achieved by increasing tourism demand. Governments have an important role to play in nurturing the indirect tourism–poverty reduction channel.

1. 固定表达：sb/sth has long been +名词/adj./done，表示“sb/sth长期以来/一直以来……”，今天这个has long been considered+名词的意思是“长期以来被视为/被认为是……”。

2. 固定表达：an effective vehicle of 有效途径，有效渠道，有效手段，of也可以换为for；“有效手段”还可以说an effective means/method of。vehicle在这里不是“交通工具”的意思，它表示“工具；手段；途径”。“一个重要手段”就可以说a major vehicle for。如，实现经济现代化的一个重要手段 a major vehicle for the economic modernisation。

3. 同义表达：poverty reduction意思是“减贫”，和poverty alleviation是同义表达，它的动词形式是alleviate[əˈliːvieɪt] poverty。

4. the creation of permanent jobs表示创造永久性就业机会，我们常说“创造更多就业机会”就是create more jobs。这个在报告和白皮书中很常见，例如这句：

大规模开展职业技能培训，注重解决结构性就业矛盾，鼓励创业带动就业。

We will launch vocational skills training programs on a big scale, give particular attention to tackling structural unemployment, and create more jobs by encouraging business startups.

5. 固定表达：have an important role to play in sth/doing sth，意思是在……上发挥重要作用；扮演重要角色。

6. the indirect tourism–poverty reduction channel：注意这个indirect修饰的是channel，指间接渠道；

tourism–poverty reduction表示旅游减贫，相当于poverty reduction through tourism，tourism-driven poverty alleviation。如中国日报上说中国的旅游减贫工作得到了国际组织的援助，原句是：

The tourism-driven poverty alleviation work has also received assistance from international organizations. For example, the World Bank financed tourism projects in provinces such as Gansu and Guizhou.
