《夜莺与玫瑰》是英国唯美主义作家王尔德的童话作品之一，收录于《快乐王子及其他故事》，出版于1888年。王尔德最初创作的目的是讽刺19世纪的维多利亚时代，工业革命背景下当时社会的拜金主义风气、市侩哲学和虚伪的道德。

在童话《夜莺与玫瑰》中描绘了—个虚构的故事，以此来揭示了英国资本主义社会中人与人之间赤裸裸的金钱关系和由此产生的种种丑恶现象。追求心灵的唯美世界，以艺术之美来对抗庸俗的社会现实。这是一个悲伤的故事，既是一篇对爱情的嘲讽之作，也是一篇对唯美主义爱情的追求之作。

"If you want a red rose," said the Tree, "you must build it out of music by moonlight, and stain it with your own heart’s blood. You must sing to me with your breast against a thorn. All night long you must sing to me, and the thorn must pierce your heart, and your life-blood must flow into my veins, and become mine."

"Death is a great price to pay for a red rose," cried the Nightingale, "and Life is very dear to all. It is pleasant to sit in the green wood, and to watch the Sun in his chariot  of gold, and the Moon in her chariot of pearl. Sweet is the scent of the hawthorn, and sweet are the bluebells that hide in the valley, and the heather that blows on the hill. Yet love is better than Life, and what is the heart of a bird compared to the heart of a man?"

那玫瑰树说道：“你若要一朵红玫瑰，你须在月色里用音乐制成，还要用自己的心血染它。你须将胸口顶着一根尖刺，为我歌唱。你必须整夜地为我歌唱。那刺必须刺入你的心头，你生命的血液将流进我的心房。”  

夜莺叹道：“拿死来买一朵红玫瑰，代价真不小，谁的生命不是宝贵的，坐在青郁的森林里，看那驾着金马车的、月亮在白珠辇内驰骋，真是一桩乐事！山楂花的味儿真香，山谷里的吊钟花和山坡上野草真美。然而，爱比生命更宝贵。一个鸟的心又怎能和人的心比？”

1. pierce：美 [pɪrs]，意为“刺穿；洞察；响彻；深深地打动；穿过”，在这里意思为刺穿，打洞，使心如刀割，如柯林斯词典中例句：

I'm having my ears pierced on Saturday.

我周六要去扎耳洞。

This sound, like all music, pierced my heart like a dagger.

这种声音像所有的音乐一样，如短剑般直刺我心。

2. lifeblood：意为“生命的根源；生命的血液；命根子；生命线”，如经济学人中这句：

1. dear：n. 亲爱的人；可爱的人；仁慈的人；（称呼所爱的人）乖乖；int. 哎呀（语气词）；adv. 高价地；疼爱地；adj. 亲爱的；尊敬的；昂贵的。文中的意为“昂贵，珍贵”。例如金融时报中这句：

And hiring in a region where talent is dear sounds alarming; except that revenues are rising faster than costs. 在这个人才昂贵的地区进行招聘，听起来有些吓人，所幸的是，收入增长速度超过了成本增长。

2. chariot：美 ['tʃeriət]，作名词意为“（古代用于战斗或比赛的）双轮敞篷马车”；作动词意为“驾驭；乘战车；用马车运送”。在文中作者用战车来表达一种意象，太阳坐在金色的战车中，月亮坐在珍珠白的战车中。

在写作中同样可以用这一意象来丰富语言色彩，例如TED演讲中，也用到了这一词作为意象：

I  no  longer hear time's winged chariot drawing near, or at least not as much as I did before. 我再也听不到时间高速战车催促迫近的声音，至少不再像以前我感觉到的那么多。

3. hawthorn：美 ['hɔ.θɔrn]，山楂树；山楂；霍桑。

4. bluebell：美 ['blu.bel]，风信子；蓝铃花；蓝钟花。

5. heather：美 ['heðər]，石楠属植物（低矮野生，开紫、粉红或白色小花）；形容词意为“杂色的；似石楠的”。也就是杂草；野草。

6. blow：名词意为“吹；打击；挫折；（用手、武器等的）猛击”；动词意为“吹；刮；喘气；吹奏（哨子、乐器等）”；作语气词表示厌烦。

这一词有很多固定短语，“飞吻”是blow a kiss；“告发”是blow the whistle on sb/sth；“彻底摧毁；毁灭”为blow sb/sth out of the water。

关于blow一词的用法还有a blow to，表示“沉重打击；沉重一击”，比如我们在《微信被禁，你选苹果还是微信？| 经济学人双语》这篇文章里讲过这句：
