《我弥留之际》是福克纳于1930年发表的长篇小说。该作讲述美国南方农民本德伦为遵守对妻子的承诺，率全家将妻子的遗体运回家乡安葬的“苦难历程”。小说完全由本德伦一家、众邻居及相关人员五十九节内心独白构成，多角度讲述了这个故事，是作者运用多视角叙述方法及意识流法的又一杰作。

I notice how it takes a lazy man, a man that hates moving, to get set on moving once he does get started off, the same as he was set on staying still, like it aint the moving he hates so much as the starting and the stopping. And like he would be kind of proud of whatever come up to make the moving or the setting still look hard.

我注意到一个懒惰的人，一个不喜欢动的人，一旦开始动了就会决心继续动下去，就跟他不动时决心一步也不动一样，仿佛他非常恨的倒不是动本身，而是启动与停止。倘若出了什么事使得启动与停止发生困难，他倒会显出一副扬扬得意的样子。

第一句：I notice how it takes a lazy man, a man that hates moving, to get set on moving once he does get started off, the same as he was set on staying still, like it aint the moving he hates so much as the starting and the stopping. 

我注意到一个懒惰的人，一个不喜欢动的人，一旦开始动了就会决心继续动下去，就跟他不动时决心一步也不动一样，仿佛他非常恨的倒不是动本身，而是启动与停止。

1. Get/be set on doing sth：下决心干某事，后面的was set on staying still也是这个用法。还如柯林斯词典这句：

She's set on getting this new job.

她打定主意要得到这个新工作。

2. to get set on moving once he does get started off一旦开始动了就会决心继续动下去：does表强调，get started off表开始，也可以用get started。

3. Stay still：一动不动，静止，如柯林斯词典这句：

Don't move ─ stay perfectly still.

别动——一点都别动。

4. aint：就是is not。

5. so much as：与其说，不如说，如柯林斯词典这句：

I don't really think of her as a daughter so much as a very good friend

与其说我把她当作女儿，不如说把她当作好朋友。

第二句：And like he would be kind of proud of whatever come up to make the moving or the setting still look hard. 

倘若出了什么事使得启动与停止发生困难，他倒会显出一副扬扬得意的样子。

1. And like：是like it aint the moving he hates so much as the starting and the stopping的并列。

2. kind of：有点。

3. come up：发生，上升，被提及，如柯林斯词典这句：

I was delayed — something came up at home.

我耽搁了些时候——家里出了点事。

4. the setting still：set still相当于前面的stay still。
