《德伯家的苔丝》是哈代的代表作，是“威塞克斯系列”中的一部。它描写了一位农村姑娘的悲惨命运。哈代在小说的副标题中称女主人公为“一个纯洁的女人”，公开地向维多利亚时代虚伪的社会道德挑战。

第一句：Don’t, Tess; don’t argue. Different societies, different manners.

不要说了，不要辩解了。社会不同，规矩就不同。

1. argue [ˈɑːrɡjuː] v. 争论；争吵；争辩；论证；说理；证明；表明。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

You can argue till you’re blue in the face, but you won’t change my mind.

3. initiate [ɪˈnɪʃieɪt , ɪˈnɪʃiət] v. 开始；发起；创始；使了解；传授；教…开始尝试。如汉英大词典上有这么一句话：

He is the master who initiated me into the craft.

他是我的入门师傅。

4. proportion [prəˈpɔːrʃn] n. 部分；份额；比例；倍数关系；主次，匀称。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：

Always try to keep a sense of proportion (=of the relative importance of different things).

应常记在心，事有轻重缓急之分。

文中proportions of social things 指“世事人情”。

第四、五句：“I am only a peasant by position, not by nature!” She spoke with an impulse to anger, but it went as it came.

3. impulse [ˈɪmpʌls] n. 冲动；心血来潮；一时的念头；脉冲；冲击；冲量；推动力。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

He tends to act on impulse .

他往往凭一时冲动行事。

第六句：“Decrepit families imply decrepit wills, decrepit conduct.

1. imply [ɪmˈplaɪ] v. 含有…的意思；暗示；暗指；说明；表明；必然包含；使有必要。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

2. decrepit [dɪˈkrepɪt] adj. 衰老的；老朽的；破旧的。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：

2. seedling [ˈsiːdlɪŋ] n. 秧苗；籽苗；幼苗。如2016年12月六级真题中有这么一句话：

Otherwise, it would be unable to grow from a seedling.

否则，树也不可能从一株秧苗成长起来。

3. effete [ɪˈfiːt] adj. 衰弱的；衰败的；丧失权力的；软弱的；女人气的。

4. aristocracy [ˌærɪˈstɑːkrəsi] n. （某些国家的）贵族。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

She married into the aristocracy.

她因为婚姻关系而跻身贵族。
