Nevertheless, one hundred and forty pounds, to which was added the dignity thatcomes of good living and universal respect, enabled him to carry himself in rightroyal fashion. During the four years since his puppyhood he had lived the life of a sated aristocrat; he had a fine pride in himself, was even a trifle egotistical, as country gentlemen sometimes become because of their insular situation. But he had saved himself by not becoming a mere pampered house-dog. Hunting and kindred outdoor delights had kept down the fat and hardened his muscles; and to him, as to the cold-tubbing races, the love of water had been a tonic and a health preserver.

1. puppyhood 幼年时期。
2. sated [ˈseɪtɪd] adj. 过度满足的；过多享用的。如金融时报上有这么一句话：

3. aristocrat [əˈrɪstəkræt] n. 贵族。如剑桥词典上有这么一句话：
Many aristocrats were killed in the French Revolution.
法国大革命中很多贵族被处死。
第二句（下）：he had a fine pride in himself, was even a trifle egotistical, as country gentlemen sometimes become because of their insular situation.
跟那些因孤陋寡闻而沾沾自喜的乡村绅士相似，他一向有些自负，自高自大。
1. have a fine pride in sb 对……很自豪。
2. trifle [ˈtraɪfl] n. 稍微；一点儿；小事；琐事；不值钱的东西。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：
She seemed a trifle anxious.
她似乎有点儿焦急。
3. egotistical [ˌiː.ɡoʊˈtɪs.tɪk] adj. 任性的；自我本位的；傲慢的。如外研社英语同义词辨析词典上有这么一句话：
He has become an egotistical person.
他变成了一个狂妄自大的人。
4. insular [ˈɪnsələr] adj. 只关心本国利益的；思想褊狭的；保守的；海岛的；岛屿的。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
The British are often accused of being insular.
英国人常被指责为思想褊狭。
第三句：But he had saved himself by not becoming a mere pampered house-dog.

1. save sb by doing 使某人免受于，挽救某人免于某事。
2. pamper [ˈpæmpər] v. 细心照顾；精心护理；娇惯；纵容。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：

3. house-dog 家犬。

第四句（下）：and to him, as to the cold-tubbing races, the love of water had been a tonic and a health preserver.
