《理智与情感》讲述的是出生在英国乡绅家庭的两姐妹埃莉诺和玛丽安曲折复杂的爱情故事。姐姐善于用理智来控制情感,妹妹对情感却毫无节制,因此面对爱情时,她们作出了不同的反应。

The idea however started by her, was immediately pursued by Colonel Brandon, who was on every occasion mindful of the feelings of others; and much was said on the subject of rain by both of them.

1. grateful [ˈɡreɪtfl] adj. 感激的;表示感谢的;(尤用于书信或正式场合提出请求)感激不尽。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话:

2. observe [əbˈzɜːrv] v. 看到;注意到;观察到;观察;注视;监视;说话;评论。如牛津词典上有这么一句话:
She observed that it was getting late.
她说天色晚了。
3. rain very hard 滂沱大雨,雨下地很大。如中国日报上有这么一句话:
It may rain very hard one minute, but then the sun shines warmly the next.
可能前一分钟雨下得很大,后一分钟太阳又温暖地照耀着。

夫人你需要点什么?
4. attention [əˈtenʃn] n. 注意;专心;留心;注意力;兴趣;关注;殷勤;关心。如外研社英语同义词辨析词典上有这么一句话:
Many children crave attention.
许多孩子渴望得到关心。
5. dislike [dɪsˈlaɪk] n. 不喜爱;厌恶;反感;不喜欢的事物;讨厌的事物。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话:
He made no attempt to conceal his dislike of me.
他毫不掩饰对我的厌恶。
6. inelegant [ɪnˈelɪɡənt] adj. 不优美的;不优雅的。如金融时报上有这么一句话:
It seems inelegant to dive right in, but then perhaps better to get it over and done with, leaving the pudding for lighter matters.
单刀直入似乎不够优雅,不过先把问题解决,最后吃布丁时聊些轻松的话题或许更好。
7. raillery [ˈreɪləri] n. 善意的玩笑;戏谑;逗趣。如小说《悲惨世界》中有这么一句话:
He indulged in gentle raillery at God with closed doors.
他常在人后偷偷嘲笑上帝。

It happened on three separate occasions.
这事在三个不同的场合发生过。
4. mindful [ˈmaɪndfl] adj. 记着;想着;考虑到。如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话:
We must be mindful of the consequences of selfishness.
