我出生的老屋里，厅堂前有一个石面铺砌的院子，足供我嬉戏奔跑。院子两侧，东西相对，各有一个月洞门。为什么我总是记得那两扇大圆门呢？是因为它不同于普通的长方形门框，圆圆的像天上月宫吗？抑或是，两扇大门之间，有一块小小的天地，曾经是我骑竹马驰骋的所在？我常常想起故乡的老屋，它充满了我童年的回忆。

I used to play on the flagstones of the courtyard in front of the hall of the old house where I had been born. On either side of the courtyard was a moon gate. Why did the two big moon gates always remain in my memory? Was it because they differed from ordinary rectangular gates in resembling the big round gate ofthe legendary palace on the moon? Or was it because of the little world between the two big gates where I used to play happily? I often think of the old house in my hometown. It brings back many, many memories of my childhood.

I used to play on the flagstones of the courtyard in front of the hall of the old house where I had been born. 

1. used to do sth 过去常常做某事，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

You used to see a lot of her, didn't you?

你过去常见她吧？

2. flagstone [ˈflæɡstoʊn] n. 石板（方形，用于铺地面、小径等）。

第二句：院子两侧，东西相对，各有一个月洞门。

On either side of the courtyard was a moon gate.

1. courtyard [ˈkɔːrtjɑːrd]  n.（通常为城堡、大宅第等的）庭院，院子，天井，如汉英大词典上有这么一句话：

There are some jujube trees in that courtyard.

那个院子里有几棵枣树。

2. a moon gate 月洞门。

第三句：为什么我总是记得那两扇大圆门呢？

Why did the two big moon gates always remain in my memory?

1. remain in one’s memory 留在某人的记忆中，如汉英大词典上有这么一句话：

This visit will always remain in my memory.

这次访问将永远留在我的记忆中。

2. “大圆门”也就是前一句说到的“月洞门”，所以是moon gates。

第四句：是因为它不同于普通的长方形门框，圆圆的像天上月宫吗？

Was it because they differed from ordinary rectangular gates in resembling the big round gate of the legendary palace on the moon?

1. differ from 与…不同；不同意（某意见或某人），如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

Things in the world differ from each other in a thousand ways.

世界上的事物是千差万别的。

2. rectangular [rekˈtæŋɡjələr] adj. 长方形的；矩形的，比如“一张长方形桌子”就可以说a rectangular table。

3. resemble [rɪˈzembl] v. 看起来像；显得像；像，如汉英大词典上有这么一句话：

She resembles her sister in appearance but not in character.

她外貌上像她的姐姐，性格上却不同。

4. the legendary palace on the moon 天上月宫。

第五句：抑或是，两扇大门之间，有一块小小的天地，曾经是我骑竹马驰骋的所在？

Or was it because of the little world between the two big gates where I used to play happily?

1. the little world 一块小小的天地。

2. where I used to play happily是world的定语从句。

第六句：我常常想起故乡的老屋，它充满了我童年的回忆。

I often think of the old house in my hometown. It brings back many, many memories of my childhood.

1. think of  想起，想到，认为，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

Think of a number and multiply it by two.

想出一个数，然后乘以二。

2. bring back 使记起；使想起；恢复（惯例）；使（潮流）再度流行，如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：

Your article brought back sad memories for me.

你的文章使我想起了伤心的往事。

3. memories of childhood 童年的回忆，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

Memories of her childhood came flooding back.

她童年的往事涌上心头。
