花虽多，但无奇花异草。珍贵的花草不易养活，看着一棵好花生病欲死是件难过的事。我不愿时时落泪。北京的气候，对养花来说，不算很好。冬天冷，春天多风，夏天不是干旱就是大雨倾盆；秋天最好，可是忽然会闹霜冻。在这种气候里，想把南方的好花养活，我还没有那么大的本事。因此，我只养些好种易活、自己会奋斗的花草。
I grow many flowers, but none of them are exotic or rare ones. It is difficult to grow a precious flower species. And I feel bad to see a good flower dying of illness. I don’t want often to shed tears over that. Freezing in winter, windy in spring, and either too dry or too often visited by rainstorms in summer. While autumn is the best of all, it is often plagued by a sudden frost. In a climate like this, it is far beyond my capacity to grow precious flowers of southernbreed. Therefore, I only grow flowers and plants that are hardy and enjoy a high survival rate.
第一句：花虽多，但无奇花异草。
I grow many flowers, but none of them are exotic or rare ones.
1. exotic [ɪɡˈzɑːtɪk] adj. 来自异国（尤指热带国家）的；奇异的；异国情调的；异国风味的，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
Exotic pets are the in thing right now.
2. none of 没有一个，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
None of us can foretell what lies ahead.
第二句：珍贵的花草不易养活，看着一棵好花生病欲死是件难过的事。
It is difficult to grow a precious flower species. And I feel bad to see a good flower dying of illness.
1. species（动植物的）物种，种，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
The sea turtle is an endangered species.
2. die of 死于（疾病、过度悲伤等）；强烈地感受到……如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
400 people a year die of this disease on average.
第三、四句：我不愿时时落泪。北京的气候，对养花来说，不算很好。
I don’t want often to shed tears over that. But Beijing’s climate is more or less unfit for the growing of flowers.
1. shed tears over 因……流泪，因……悲痛，因……惋惜。
2. be unfit for sth/doing sth不适合，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
The housing was unfit for human habitation.
第五句：冬天冷，春天多风，夏天不是干旱就是大雨倾盆；秋天最好，可是忽然会闹霜冻。

1. freezing [ˈfriːzɪŋ] adj. 极冷的；冰冻的；冰点以下的，如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：

2. the best of all 最好的，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
They're all good players, but she's the best of all.
3. be plagued by sth，受……困扰/折磨/纠缠，如外研社英语同义词辨析词典上有这么一句话：
He was plagued by insomnia.
第六句：在这种气候里，想把南方的好花养活，我还没有那么大的本事。
In a climate like this, it is far beyond my capacity to grow precious flowers of southern breed.
1. it is far beyond one’s capacity to do sth 做某事超出某人的能力。
2. breed [briːd] n. 品种（尤指人工培育的狗、猫或牲畜）；（人的）类型，种类，如牛津词典上有这么一句话：
This particular breed of cattle matures early.
第七句：因此，我只养些好种易活、自己会奋斗的花草。
Therefore, I only grow flowers and plants that are hardy and enjoy a high survival rate.
1. hardy [ˈhɑːrdi] adj. 能吃苦耐劳的；适应力强的；耐寒的；能越冬的，如柯林斯词典上有这么一句话：
The silver-leaved varieties of cyclamen are not quite as hardy.
2. enjoy a high survival rate 存活率高。
