《基督山伯爵》是大仲马最具代表性的小说，讲述的是19世纪法国皇帝拿破仑“百日王朝”时期水手辛巴德、布索尼神父、威尔莫勋爵报恩和复仇故事。作品创作于政治动荡的年代，作者以这一时期社会生活大背景作为小说创作的主要背景，以曲折的人物命运侧面展示了整个社会的动荡不安。

There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel, that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living. Never forget that until the day when God shall deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is summed up in these two words−− Wait and hope.

第一句：There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more.

在这世界上既无所谓幸福也无所谓不幸，只有一种状况和另一种状况的比较，如此而已。

1. neither...... nor 既不，也不。如牛津词典上有这么一句话：

I neither knew nor cared what had happened to him.

2. misery [ˈmɪzəri] n. 痛苦；悲惨；穷困；悲惨的生活；不幸的事；痛苦的事。如金融时报上有这么一句话：

In Europe, with its increasing numbers of elderly and a shrinking labour force, every notch upwards in unemployment spells further misery.

在欧洲，随着老年人数量的上升和劳动力人口的下滑，失业率每上升一点都意味着更多不幸。

3. state [steɪt] n. 状态；状况；情况；国家；州；邦。如汉英大词典上有这么一句话：
